This is pack up and go week fellow observers, Merritt Star Quest is almost here. Who needs Xmas, this is much better. Remember this is "pack it in pack it out" as we don't have bins this year. And for those of you with generators, please respect the distance between us that do not. Also, from a dog owner, all pets on a leash at all times, and clean up after... MMc

Wouldn't it be perfect if they kept the generators on the east half of the site. Then the other half of us could camp, eat and nap in peace.
See you there.

Thanks for picking up on the generator noise, DSD. This is the very reason I left MKSP after 25 consecutive years. And also the very reason I camp where I do. So any body doing camera work, head East and find the nice sand berm to get behind. Last year I visited G.S. at this spot and looked at the Pelican on the big screen. There were several guys doing the same. I could not hear them at my camp. MMc

Sure, Generators and bright Monitors stay east.
Shoot, if we get there early we'll just tell the uninformed that is the policy. heh heh. Give them all the east: NE and SE.
The west will be for the peaceful crowd that don't use 'coffee grinders' (go-to scopes) know how to cook without microwaves, don't need air conditioning or TV's, and don't need to endlessly charge their batteries.
This is beginning to sound like a rant. Perhaps I need a beer.

Hey guys:
Oh, oh! Don't hate me but I just picked up a little Champion inverter generator. Also, I sometimes use an iPad to use Sky Safari, and I also have a computerized scope! The good news: inverter generators are quieter, (and I won't be firing mine up at 8am), I heavily red screen my iPad at low brightness, and my scope is a Celestron, not one of those crazy loud Meades! (Ha-ha!). I do prefer the west side of the field so I can catch Orion rising a bit sooner than I would on the east side. That usually puts me up quite late... so I like my sleep too!! Besides Darrell, don't you have that special Boler "acoustical egg-slipstream decibel reduction" retrofit? 😎 Haha!
All kidding aside, I hear ya. MSQ is a special place and it's only once a year so situational awareness and respect for your neighbours makes it a better experience for all. If you guys catch me doing something stupid just let me know! I have been known to accidentally slide my headlamp switch to the white light side... usually the only person I bother is me, blinding myself temporarily! 😳

Sounds good Terry. No coffee grinder. Very red screen. Good point on observing Orion. Nothing like a trailer for keeping out of any wind.
Since I got the clam shell Boler I no longer hear guys snoring in their tent trailers. it's also one of the few vintage ones that still has its full half inch insulation skin still intact inside. It's good for gens too --- but not too long eh?
I leave for Merritt on Thursday for a two and a half hour window before moon rise. Friday might be good too. Then it could be shooting through sucker holes in the clouds for the next couple of days. After that I'm sure it will stabilize for great viewing.
Looks like fun.

People settle down. I know there is a "pro generator" crowd getting vocal to our President. He doesn't need the feedback. Direct it to me. I am one who happens to agree with what Darrell said. Besides I started it. I hate your gen noise, I don't care what you think how quiet it is. Or how clean it runs. I call you all out on it. You know better. All I ask for is a little peace and quiet. And leave our Pres. alone. Feedback can be sent here, to me. Or you can always drop by my camp, where the BlueBirds can be heard, and discuss this. MMc

To see Orion (with a generator), how about the west edge of the EAST side? Near that road that cuts through the pit.
No light pollution but it's okay for noise pollution -- and the gen fumes are disgusting (gasp).
We've got handicapped johns (or whatever they're called this year), we're into recycling so no garbage bin, (I can see and do that) But we can't have a quadrant for peace and quiet?
