Hey everyone:
Anyone gonna try to head to Kobau tonight? I was just gonna do one night but I am unsure.. worried about smoke from the Snowy Mountain fire nearby. The last update at the Mt. Kobau Facebook page was Aug. 2. so if anyone is already up in that area please let us know if you can give us a more current update. thanks.

Well I dug a bit deeper... as of Saturday around 7:30am a poster on the Mt. Kobau FB page Facebook says: "Saturday morning, sunshine over Mount Kobau and no smoke". Also the latest two Highway cams look good:
Think I am gonna give it a go! Maybe see some of you there.

Good Luck, Terry! The sky does look good right now, hopefully you will get a nice sky tonight. I would be interested in an update on the condition of the road, if you don't mind. Please give Jim Faille's my best regards. Mark McLaughlin President FVAS & MSQ

Well, my trip to Kobau was a success! The Smokey Mountain Fire was very noticeable across the valley, but the smoke was not an issue at all thanks to favourable winds. Sky was a bit iffy when I got their at 5pm but it cleared up nicely and I got a solid 5 hours under the sky with my CPC 1100!
Mark, the road was not too bad, I was in my 2006 Caravan I just took it nice and slow... 15kph the whole way. Any reasonably maintained car would be fine. The only thing I don't like is the time to get up that road... It took me a bit over an hour.
Glad I made the trip.... everything lined up nicely for a change. May head up there mid week for a couple days. Alternatively I was thinking about checking out Table Mountain. Any one been there?

Glad you had a good time at K. Were there any Sky Quality Meter readings given for darkness measurements?
I've never been to Table Mountain but have attended the Oregon Star Party a few times. Also the now defunct Mt Bachelor Star party out of Bend Ore a couple of times.
The one that really tempted me was this years Brothers Star party east of Bend. www.brosp.org/ It's quite small but very spacious and just a few miles off the highway. This year it was near the solstice in June giving an almost 4 hour window of no twilight and 5 more degrees of Scorpius visible on the horizon. That's the time a place to see the summer Milky Way.
Keep us tuned if you go to Table Mtn.

Hey Mark:
No, I didnt see any sky meters at Kobau. I would sure like to get one of those. My objective observations:
Cloud cover = 5/5 Transparency = 4/5 Seeing = 3.5/5 Wind = light below 5kph odd gusts higher Temp = 5-10 degrees celsius
If I go to Table Mountain I will head out Wed. Morning. Weather for Oroville looks clear but man it is gonna be hot!! My weather app shows it could reach 42 degrees celsius (107 degrees farenheit!!). Apparently there is hardly any shaded camping spots... might be too hot for me!
That Star Party at Bend Oregon looks interesting. I have seen a bit about it on the web. I like the idea it is nice and spread out like MSQ. Anyways if I go to Table Mountain I will post a review.

Thanks Terry,
I might be wrong but I vaguely recall way in the past of Table Mtn having a limit to the number of attendees.
I also read somewhere there could be a phone app for a sky quality meter equivalent using the camera lens. Just the filters would be missing. Interesting.
Darrell.

Hey Darrell:
Yes I know that pre-registration for Table Mountain ended a couple weeks ago, their site says on site registration only. I am assuming that means they are anticipating space is still available... looks like rhey have a limitt if 700 people!. If I decide to go I will check out the website and FB page. If I go and find out they are full, I am sure I can find somewhere to camp. Worst case scenario maybe I can head back up to Merritt and sneak into the Gravel pit for a night or two. I really wanna get out because I usually cant go to Merritt when it is in September, though I mIght be able to sqeek in a night or two if everything lines up!
