I drove from Calgary through Kamloops and down the Coq yesterday. The smoke started through the Rockies and stayed with us for most of the drive. Seemed to be maybe the thickest at Merritt. Heard on the local radio station in Kamloops that Mt. Tod was on fire, 39 km. NE of Kamloops. Even the smoke in the Fraser Valley was very bad yesterday -- could hardly see Sumas Mt. 22km. from Annis Road in east Chilliwack.
Hopefully this rain today and wetter weather this week is enough to slow the fires and clean the air for next week.
The 14 day forecast for Merritt looks very good starting the 23rd -- the first day of the MSQ!

Rain, more rain. I am going up a week early just to shift the good karma into the area. Last year it poured on me for 3 nights then came the clear skies,a record for me of 21.88 on the SQM. The Draco Dwarf galaxy was great in both 16" scopes,i think the Panoptic beat the Ethos out on this elusive object. I don't think the skies will be as good this year in regards to transparency, but who knows what weather will blow in between now and then. MMc

I'll go early only if the weather is quite good. I guess I'll have to go get that 10mm Delos. (my 11 mm Plossl is about 17 years old) If the Draco Dwarf is there in the Panoptic then I'll be trying to get the low surface brightness Andromeda I, II, & III dwarfs. Always nice to add to my Local Group collection.

Weather be damned I am outta here next week. A 10 Delos?,why not go all the way and move up to an nice ETHOS? With your rig ,I should think it would look fabulous.Sans ParaCorr. I can't understand why "you guys" still like to look though anything less. On the other side, a Delos is a move up from a Plossl. We can discuss eyepieces at MSQ over a cold IPA! MMc

I picked up the Delos today -- very nice.
Hoping to head up either Friday or Saturday. Also I'm hoping the big rigs park north to south in the back and not block the view to the south.
I believe I've found a new use for my little fridge in my antique Boler. And it's for discussing eyepieces.

Looks like we have a new fire today,in the Minnie Lake area caused by lightning. DSD, i too hope the big RV's will respect our sight lines at the Pit. How hard can it be with all that space. My rant is below.... Just a heads up,there is a small group of observers that park near the back to aim toward the south. we use the famous "four trees" to give us a guide were not to park. This is the lowest spot south that we can see and if you park ,you block the view. Also your furnace at night puts out a big heat plume. So if you see me coming to visit upon your arrival, i will kindly ask you to relocate. I know i no authority here to do this. But i will ask. Jack N. is not here this year. Do you really want to be the jerk that spoils our fun? MMc

Thankyou Chief Inspector Mark. Go get em.
It's also harder to get that afternoon nap with their generators running for their AC. Real camping. Perhaps someday we'll have a designated big rig corner. In the mean time we all just spread out and enjoy the view.
Hope to head up tomorrow morning. Will be nice. See you all soon.

Just got back. Had one short, decent night, one Good night and one Very Good night. On a poor night saw some nice northern lights. The Delos was a thrill. Great people to observe with and to visit with. (the generators weren't a problem) Slept very well. Nice clean, dry air.
Went on two nice hikes. The 29 year old fridge in the little Boler still works!
One observing first: four of us saw a mother ship. I won't say who saw it aside from me, but it moved around and did a couple of loops. I thought it was someone's model drone with a light on at night but that was ruled out. Now I understand how people can have 'sightings'.
Had a very good time. Hope the weather holds for everyone else for the last nights.
