fire!

Well i guess if it burns now it can't burn later. There is a small but growing fire at Hamilton Hill, which for those who don't know is out of Merritt up the Connector. I had my truck blow a rad hose at the spot by the truck pull in at the top of the hill. Seems a lot of vehicles catch fire on this stretch of road. This one appears to be on the Forest Service Road. The cause is listed as PERSON. So this is friendly message to all my fellow astronomers and bushmen... Carry a small fire extinguisher with you and know how to use it. Put it where you can get at it when most needed. When at The Loon Lake Site, aka "The Pit", please use an ashcan for your butts. As you know there is a large grassy area in this area and everything is a dry as dust. My recent hike up there was an eyeopener. People have actually built fire pits very near my viewing spot! And there is a fair amount of garbage about. I plan on going up again in August, to spend some time cleaning up all the expletive shotgun, etc shells! sheesh! bloody "hunters" no respect for the ground they stand on. On a side note... sky was 21.0 SQM. Never really got dark.

Thanks for the heads up Mark. I'm surprised they haven't closed down the forest roads. They did about 12 years ago. Sumas mountain is now closed. With all the ATV's roaring around the province that could be a big job. One corroded spark arrester on an ATV exhaust system could start the place going.
The grass seeds at the Pit have blown farther into our area and makes it all a difficult place for smokers.
At the Oregon Star Party the Forest Service rules dictate that one can only smoke in his vehicle or on the gravel road. Generators are permitted but the Forest Service Rules can change as conditions change and they may be banned at the OSP due to fire hazard. Outside the OSP dates the Forest Service rules dictate one must carry an axe, a shovel and 5 gallons of water reserved for fire suppression use only.
Currently our situation seems worse. Hopefully by September MSQ time all will be back to normal. Meanwhile, those fire ring rocks need to be rolled down the bank. That's totally the wrong use for my cairns of rocks.
Hoping to sneak up there the middle of August. The Boler is all ready to go.
(vehicles catching fire --- obviously not Toyota's)
DSD.
