Hello Fellow Astronomers,
The Fraser Valley Astronomers Society and Robert Conrad have teamed up to present an astronomy training course. I have taken this course and I highly recommend it. Robert will guide you through the use of free astronomy software to plan, plot and organize your viewing sessions in finding dim astronomical objects and how to star hop to find them. Best part of this course is its absolutely free. The course will be held at the CrossRoads Restaurant at 1821 Sumas way Abbotsford BC. The date is next Sunday March 4 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. You will need to bring a fully charged Lap top and pen and pencil set and note book to take notes. You will also require a mathematical compass set and bring a 10’ extension cord for the lap top. Here is the course over view by Robert;
By the end of the workshop learners will be able to:
Locate various websites and resources to help identify asteroids that are visible in the night sky at any given point in time
Use a plug-in available in Stellarium to add asteroids not in its default database
Plan the best order to view asteroids (and other objects) based on the meridian transit times
Add any telescope and eyepiece to the ocular plug-in in Stellarium and starhop to objects using this feature
Configure free online starcharts to match telescope/eyepiece/accessory configurations (for example mirror image)
Create custom star charts for asteroids and other difficult objects using the AAVSO custom variable star plotter
Calculate and effectively use field of view (FOV) circles to starhop and narrow in on targets
Properly orient a starchart based on the time of night
Customize Stellarium to create a powerful learning and planning tool

It would be a good idea to have Stellarium down loaded on you laptop. It is a free down load here; stellarium.org/
Even though the course is free, seating is limited. I already have five interested people so you need to RSVP me as soon as possible at emelan@telus.net and no later than Saturday March 3 2018.
Wishing you clear skies,
Elliott Melan
