I have always wanted to use the lookout on the way up to Blackwall Peak for viewing. I already have plans for this weekend, but those of you that are going have a great time.

The Manning Lookout is very nice. (I got my first look at the Fornax galaxy cluster from there) Too bad they have closed the gate to the lookout so early after the summer. The planned observing event would be down near the camping areas somewhere. That night is the start of the Moonless Run and any observing on the days after that should be even better.

Welcome Craig,
Good to hear you're starting in your backyard. Most of my workhorse eyepieces are Plossls. Finally the Summer twilight of the weeks around the solstice is fading and we can see more in the better darkness.
The club hasn't much planned during the summer but you'll do well to keep an eye on this message board to see when impromptu observing sessions may happen. Also, hopefully as more planned events come to focus the club calendar will be updated.
A good number of us are planning on attending the Merritt Star Quest in late August and that is a deep sky, dark sky camping event that is a highlight for many of us. Our next club dinner meeting is the second Wednesday in September, visitors are welcome.
Happy observing,
Darrell FVAS member.

Hi, Darrell; I'm not clear on the status of the Lookout at Manning Park. Is access restricted more than in the past? Please clarify. Thanks, DAR

Hi Craig,
You mentioned Go-To but not the size or your scope. Since it is go-to I'll not describe the star-hop or location. Messier objects are 'M'. The darker the sky the better the scope will perform. The moon is finally starting to get out of our hair this weekend. Here's just some of the summer showpieces:
Double Stars -- Beta Cygni (Albireo), Epsilon Lyrae ('double-double' = 4 stars) Gamma Andromeda (later in evening), Zeta UMa - Mizar.
Open Clusters -- M 11 Wild Duck Cluster, NGC 457 dragonfly, NGC 869 & 884 Perseus double cluster, NGC 7789 (my favourite- fainter stars but more of them with dark skies. Most other Messier open clusters are good .
Globular Clusters: M 13 - Great Hercules Cluster, M 92, M 3, M 22, M 4, M 5, M 10, M 12, M 15.
Planetary Nebulae: M 27 - Dumbell, M 57 Ring Nebula - (needs magnification), NGC 6826 Blinking Neb, NGC 6210.
Diffuse Nebulae: M 8 Lagoon, M 20 Trifid (need dark sky), M 17 Swan or Omega.
Galaxies: M 31, 32 and 110 - Great Andromeda Galaxy plus companions 2.5 million light years away, M 81 and M 82 (plus NGC 3077) 12 million Light years, M 51 - Whirlpool with companion, needs very dark sky to see beyond two cores and halo. (more galaxies in winter and spring skies)
Carbon Star: V Aquila (faint but very orange-red)
All of us know most of these like the back of our hands and I'm bound to have missed many good ones. So if other members could throw out their other favourites that would be nice.
Remember, the darker the sky the better the scope will perform.
Happy Observing.
Darrell.

Nice, I have not been able to make it out since doing some lunar observing during the Supermoon. If you are going to do any lunar observing, you should really purchase a polarized lunar filter to protect your eyes and add some extra contrast. I managed to get a picture I should post on here in the next day or so with my phones camera through my Ethos 10mm (200x mag).
I always bring some deet along this time of year for if the bugs are bad.

I am not going, but Manning Park is very easy to find. You just take the #3 Highway (Crows Nest) when you reach Hope. You do not need to leave the main #1, it just turns into the #5 on the left and the #3 on the right. You have to stop and go through Hope to take the canyon. The crows nest cuts right through the heart of Manning park, and the lodge is easily seen ahead of time from the road (about 40-45 minutes from the park entrance). It takes about two hours going the old speed limit from Abbotsford, I have not been since the changes so I don't know if there is much time difference. If you get off the highway at the lodge, the road to lightning lake is well marked. The staff are always around for questions if you want. Here is a link to Google Maps with directions from the park entrance. You can just add in your address to see the entire way if you like. goo.gl/maps/jnP4N
